Hard Water & Your Hair: What I See Behind the Chair
By Jenn Jacoby
If you’ve ever felt like your hair just isn’t responding the way it used to—your color looks dull, your ends feel dry no matter what you use, or your scalp feels off—you’re not imagining it.
One of the most common things I see behind the chair is the impact of hard water.
What Hard Water Actually Does to Your Hair
Hard water contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that build up on the hair over time. This buildup creates a barrier, making it harder for moisture and products to actually do their job.
What that can look like:
Hair that feels dry or rough, even after conditioning
Color that fades quickly or looks dull/brassy
Blondes that lose their brightness
Hair that tangles more easily
A scalp that feels irritated or unbalanced
I often have clients tell me, “I’m using good products, but my hair just isn’t the same.”
A lot of the time, this is why.
Why It Matters More Than You Think
When there’s buildup sitting on the hair, everything else becomes less effective.
Your shampoo can’t fully cleanse.
Your conditioner can’t fully absorb.
Your styling products sit on the surface instead of working within the hair.
It’s not always about needing more products—it’s about removing what’s blocking your hair from responding in the first place.
What I Recommend to My Clients
The first step is always removing the buildup in a safe, intentional way.
In the salon, we offer detox treatments that gently break down mineral and environmental buildup without damaging the hair. It’s one of those services where you can feel the difference immediately—hair feels lighter, softer, and more responsive.
At home, I usually recommend incorporating a clarifying or detox shampoo into your routine as needed. Not every wash—but enough to keep buildup from accumulating again.
And if you’re dealing with hard water consistently, a shower filter can make a noticeable difference over time.
What You’ll Notice After
Once that buildup is removed, your hair starts to behave differently—in the best way.
Color looks brighter and lasts longer.
Hair feels softer and easier to manage.
Products actually work the way they’re supposed to.
It’s one of the simplest ways to improve the overall health and feel of your hair without overcomplicating your routine.
My Approach Behind the Chair
When a client sits in my chair, I’m always looking at the full picture—not just the color or the cut, but what’s happening with the hair over time.
If I’m noticing signs of buildup, I’ll always talk you through it and make a plan that feels realistic for your lifestyle and routine.
Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just beautiful hair when you leave the salon—it’s hair that feels good every day after.
If you’ve been feeling like your hair just isn’t “right,” this might be something to look at. And I’m always happy to talk it through with you at your next appointment.
