Less Is More: Making Good Hair a Little Less Complicated

By Shannon Long

Somewhere along the way, I think we made having good hair a lot more complicated than it needs to be.

There's always a new trend, product, or routine we're supposed to follow. And while I love trying new things (kind of comes with the job), I don't think great hair necessarily has to involve a cabinet full of products or an elaborate morning routine.

I'm a big believer in working with what you've got, with a few tweaks and products to make every day a great hair day.

Work With Your Hair, Not Against It

One of the first things I consider when working with a client is what their hair naturally wants to do.

If you have a natural wave, a haircut that encourages that movement might make your mornings a whole lot easier. If your natural color already has beautiful dimension, we might just enhance it rather than completely change it.

And if you know you're only going to spend five minutes styling your hair, tell me that, too. No judgment. Honestly, same.

I love lived-in color and soft, natural cuts because they're designed to look good beyond the day you leave the salon. A thoughtful haircut can make styling easier, and strategically placed color can give you months of beautiful grow-out without feeling like you're constantly due for another appointment.

To me, that's what low-maintenance hair should actually mean. Not neglecting your hair, but making choices that work for you.

A Little European Inspiration

I've always appreciated that effortless, slightly undone approach to beauty you see in a lot of European and Scandinavian style. Natural texture, subtle dimension, healthy-looking hair. Nothing feels overly styled or too perfect.

I've really been enjoying the brand KEUNE, a Dutch hair care brand we recently introduced at Verde. The products feel like a natural fit for that philosophy: quality hair care that helps you get more out of your hair without unnecessarily complicating your routine.

A few I've been reaching for lately:

KEUNE Long & Strong Shampoo + Conditioner

I always think a good routine starts in the shower. This duo is designed to support stronger, healthier-looking lengths, which is especially nice if you're trying to grow your hair or maintain the length you already have. A good foundation makes everything else a little easier.

KEUNE Spring Loaded

If you have natural waves or curls, this is a great example of working with your texture instead of fighting it. It helps define and encourage your natural pattern, so you can spend less time trying to create a style your hair might already be capable of.

Not Every Trend Needs to Be Your Trend

I think this is especially important when it comes to color.

Just because everyone's going darker for fall doesn't mean you need to. And just because a certain haircut is everywhere doesn't mean it's going to work with your texture or the amount of styling you're comfortable doing.

I would much rather help someone find a look they genuinely love and can maintain than convince them to try something that looks amazing for two weeks and then becomes a chore.

Sometimes that means adding a few subtle highlights instead of a full transformation. Sometimes it means keeping your natural base color and just adding some softness around your face. Sometimes, it means realizing you really don't need to change much at all!

Good Hair Should Make Your Life Easier

At the end of the day, my goal isn't to give you hair that only looks good when I style it.

I want you to be able to recreate it at home, enjoy how it grows out, and feel comfortable wearing it the way it naturally falls.

You don't need every new product or every new trend. You just need to figure out what works for your hair and your life. If you're not sure where to start, that's exactly the kind of thing I love helping people figure out. ;)
