The Truth About Hair Extensions

By Kayleigh Duplissa

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear as an extension specialist is:
“Don’t extensions damage your hair?”

And honestly — I understand why people think that. For years, extensions carried a reputation for causing breakage, thinning, or stress on the hair. But the truth is, modern extension methods have evolved tremendously, and when extensions are installed correctly, maintained properly, and customized specifically for the individual, they should not damage your natural hair.

In many cases, they can actually help it thrive.

As someone certified in both Invisible Bead Extensions (IBE) and Great Lengths, healthy hair will always come before anything else for me. My approach is never about simply adding length or volume — it’s about creating hair that looks beautiful while also protecting the integrity of your natural hair underneath.

One thing many people don’t realize is that extensions can actually support hair growth journeys. When your hair is safely tucked away inside a well-installed extension method, it experiences less daily heat styling, less friction, and less breakage from constant manipulation. Many guests find they can finally retain length because their natural hair is protected while growing out underneath the extensions!

Of course, the method matters.

Extensions are not one-size-fits-all, which is why consultations are such an important part of the process. I always look at lifestyle, hair density, scalp health, maintenance routines, and long-term goals before deciding what will work best for someone.

IBE is an incredible option for guests looking for a seamless, comfortable, low-tension method that blends beautifully and feels lightweight. Great Lengths offers highly customized keratin bond extensions that allow for incredible movement and versatility while remaining gentle on the hair when applied and removed correctly. Both methods can create stunning transformations while still prioritizing hair health.

At the end of the day, I really want people to know that extensions themselves are not the enemy. I’ve seen so many guests come in nervous because they’ve heard horror stories or had bad experiences in the past, but modern methods can truly be safe, comfortable, and incredibly natural when done the right way.

For me, healthy hair always comes first. I never want someone to feel like they have to sacrifice the integrity of their natural hair to achieve fuller or longer hair. With proper installation, maintenance, and a method that’s customized specifically to you, extensions should feel supportive — not damaging. In many cases, I actually see guests retain and grow more hair because they’re protecting their natural hair from daily heat styling and breakage.

That’s always the goal for me: beautiful results that still prioritize the health of the hair underneath.
