Why Consultations Matter
By Kayla Phakousonh
If you've ever sat down in a stylist's chair and said something like, "I just want it lived-in," you're definitely not alone. And honestly, that's exactly why consultations are so important.
A consultation isn't just a formality before we get started. It's the foundation of your appointment. It's where we build trust, get on the same page, and create a plan that's tailored specifically to you. My goal isn't just for you to love your hair when you leave the salon—it's for you to love it long after your appointment is over.
Let's Get on the Same Page
Hair terminology can be surprisingly tricky. Words like lived-in, natural, bright, or low-maintenance can mean something completely different depending on who's saying them.
Bringing inspiration photos is one of the best things you can do, but they can also be a little misleading. Lighting, filters, styling, hair density, and texture all play a role, and what looks effortless on Instagram might require a lot more upkeep in real life.
That's where the consultation really comes in. It's my chance to ask questions, understand what you love about those photos, and translate those ideas into something that works for your hair, your lifestyle, and your maintenance preferences. The goal is for us to walk into the appointment feeling completely aligned before we ever mix color or pick up a pair of shears.
Your Hair Has a Story
Before I can create a plan, I also want to understand your hair's history.
Previous color, box dye, glosses, medications, hormonal changes, stress, postpartum hair changes, and even your daily styling habits all affect how your hair behaves today.
Sometimes clients apologize for giving me "too much information," but honestly, those little details are often the missing piece of the puzzle. The more I understand where your hair has been, the better I can protect where it's going.
Which brings me to one of the biggest priorities during every consultation...
Healthy Hair First. Always.
One of the first things I'm doing is assessing the health of your hair. I'm looking at things like elasticity, porosity, density, breakage, and your scalp to help determine what's realistic today.
Sometimes that means having an honest conversation about what your hair can safely handle right now versus what might be better as a long-term goal.
That's never about saying no. It's about saying, "Let's get you there the right way."
Because beautiful hair should never come at the expense of healthy hair.
Every Appointment Is Customized
One of my favorite things about this industry is that no two appointments are ever exactly alike.
Two guests can bring me the exact same inspiration photo, but their hair, lifestyle, and goals may call for completely different techniques. Color placement, formulation, cutting, maintenance, and even the products I recommend are all customized to the person sitting in my chair.
I also think it's important that you understand why I'm recommending something. Whether it's a certain technique, a product, or even a multi-session plan, I want you to feel informed and confident every step of the way. When we both understand the plan, there's trust—and that's when the best results happen.
Planning Beyond Today
A consultation isn't just about today's appointment. It's also where we talk about the practical side of your hair.
How long will this service take?
What's the investment?
How often will you need maintenance?
What will your routine look like at home?
These conversations help eliminate surprises and make sure your hair fits your lifestyle—not the other way around.
I'm also thinking beyond today's visit. As your life changes, your hair goals will probably change too. My job is to help create a plan that grows with you, so we're always working toward healthy, beautiful hair that feels like you.
The Conversation Never Really Ends
One thing I always tell my guests is that the consultation doesn't stop once the cape goes on.
Throughout your appointment, I'll continue checking in, talking through what I'm doing, and making sure we're still feeling good about the plan. I want you to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing feedback, and knowing we're in this together.
When clients feel truly heard, everything changes. They can relax, trust the process, and enjoy the experience. And for me, that's just as important as the final result.
Because at the end of the day, a consultation is about so much more than deciding on a haircut or color.
It's about building trust, protecting the health of your hair, creating a plan that's realistic for your lifestyle, and helping you leave the salon feeling like the very best version of yourself.
Great hair doesn't happen by accident.
It starts with a conversation. 💚
